TSUGIKI

2024

‘Tsuguki’ is a series of works inspired by Japanese restoration of historical wooden architecture.

Beams taken from hundred-years-old farm barns are processed by hand and joined with new wood, giving a second life to construction waste. Nails are removed from the beams and the notches are filled with a brand new piece, celebrating handcrafting and the past life, creating contrast between old and new. These reclaimed wood is monumental to all that happened in the barns, and the story continues in the form of furniture.

It is an exploration of the concept of ‘repair’ and ‘care’ in design practice, inviting discussion about history, culture, and sustainability.
